Exactly what the Frozen Frontier organizers hoped for: no snow and a standing room only crowd of more than 11,000 as the Rochester Americans faced Lake Erie at Frontier Field.
And three and a half minutes in, the home crowd had something to cheer about. Jerome Gauthier-Leduc hit Matt Ellis from a bad angle for a 1-0 Amerks lead.
Down 3-1 in the second period, the Americans rallied. Gauthier-Leduc and Phil Varone scored goals 2:12 apart and the game went to the third tied at three.
Rochester grabbed the lead on a Colton Gillies tally but with one second left, the Monsters get their third power play goal of the game, and Matt Hunwick went top shelf.
The Amerks fell behind in the shootout but their last of five shooters, Johan Larsson, tied the game and forced a sixth shooter. Ellis, the captain, slid the puck in for the game winner.
