National Signing Day was on Wednesday as numerous student athletes from Section V put their signatures to paper.

Brighton senior Devan Carter became the first Barons football player to sign with a Bowl Championship Series school when he signed his letter of intent to Rutgers.

Originally, Carter gave a verbal commitment to Syracuse, but the Scarlet Knights remained in contention from the beginning.

Rutgers plans to use Carter as a running back. Bishop Kearney grad Quentin Gause is a sophomore linebacker at Rutgers and could also switch to running back.

Alex Officer signed his letter of intent to play football at Pittsburgh.

After a visit to the school back in December, the Eastridge lineman gave his verbal commitment to the Panthers after fielding other offers from several east coast schools including Boston College, Rutgers and Syracuse.

"They said I can definitely play early if I come in and work hard and show them that I can play football and show them what made them give me a scholarship. So if I come in and work hard, I can definitely play early. I can bring being a good football player, a great athlete but not just that, a great student so i feel like Pitt is a great place for me and a great fit," Officer said.
