Bills to face Gronkowski

  • Text size: + -

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller both want to play against the Patriots this Sunday. It's still up in the air if either injured running back will. Jackson was limited Thursday after taking part in full practice Wednesday. Spiller did side work Wednesday, but was in full pads Thursday.

Hosting the Patriots means another homecoming for Rob Gronkowski. Gronk not off to such a fast start this year but does have two touchdowns in three games. Part of the reason his numbers are down is thanks in part to Aaron Hernandez's injury and the fact that the Patriots have needed Gronkowski to stay in and help the offensive line protect Tom Brady.

When you look at their roster he's also one of their best blockers," linebacker Bryan Scott said. "So it surprises me a little bit, but not so much. His pass numbers are down a little bit but he's still a huge piece of that offense."

"Gronk is Gronk," linebacker Kelvin Sheppard said. "He is a beast and a big physical guy that can also stretch the field and get down the field. You just can’t just try to bang him because he will get a double move on you and get down the field."

On the offensive side, something the Bills are working on heading into Sunday's game against New England is attacking a Patriots defense that has performed a lot better at times. Through three games the unit ranks in the top 15 in the league.

"They are totally different and playing better, to be honest with you," head coach Chan Gailey said. "They are vanilla and they are playing hard. Getting after it. You do not see all the elaborate schemes you used to see. They are playing well. I think they are fourth (in the AFC) against the run. They are playing extremely well."

The Pro Football Hall of Fame list of nominees for 2013 came out Thursday. Three Bills from the great teams of the 1990's on the list. Wide receiver Andre Reed will get another shot along with Steve Tasker and Kent Hull. Reed has been a finalist six times already but has yet to get in. Tasker has been a semi-finalist before. A group of 25 semifinalist for 2013 will be announced in November.
