New gray uniforms for the Syracuse men's team have some Orange fans seeing red. Our Kat De Maria gives us a look at the gear and fans' reaction to it.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- And now your Syracuse Orange! Wait, what? Gray?!

"They're a cool design. I think they'll spark a lot of attention," said Syracuse junior Max Fisher.

SU's new uniforms, unveiled as part of the "Hyper Elite Platinum" line for eight national championship schools by Nike Wednesday, are definitely drawing attention and debate.

"The gray jerseys are coming!" said Bill Nester, one of the owners of Manny's on the SU Hill.

Far from being red coats, the new uniforms are mostly gray with orange sides. They say "'Cuse" on the front and have SU's logo and championship year on the back. For Syracuse fans, for whom there's no such thing as too much orange, they say the jerseys don't have enough.

"I think the orange could have been a little brighter. It's more like a pomegranate," said Fisher.

Unfortunately, fans' criticism has not been limited to hue.

"I saw on Twitter this morning that no one liked them. Everyone was like, 'These jerseys suck.' And I was like I actually kind of like them," said sophomore Brigid Judge.

Feedback has been similar on our web site, where 71 percent of people panned the new uniforms. On our Facebook, one fan wrote "Just doesn't seem like Syracuse without the ORANGE and BLUE!!"

Others asked...

"Why?" said SU fan George Cannellos.

Good question. For people who live in Syracuse, one explanation might come to mind. But gray skies have nothing to do with the uniform trend.

"It's an elite thing. We've won a national title in the past and have gone to the Final Four many times. It's an honor to wear gray," Nester said.

For fans of the regular jerseys, there's no need to feel blue or gray. The orange one won't be going anywhere, except, of course, away games. And the white one will only be benched the limited time Coach Boeheim and the team choose to wear the gray jerseys at the Dome.

"They're going to wear it at least one game," Nester said.

The gray jerseys will certainly mean more green for Nike, as leading teams wear them and fans buy them. Gray has become a trendy uniform color across the country. But in Syracuse, there's a rivalry issue.

"The Hoyas have gray," Judge said.

"How come they're like Georgetown? That'll be the same thing. That's not good," Cannellos said.

At least one fan has found a way to make peace with it and support the Orange and their new wear.

"As long as there's not Orange on Georgetown, we're okay," said Victor Jenkins of Syracuse.

At stores like Manny's, the new gray jerseys have not come in yet. Nester says he's expecting them in within a few days. They will cost more than Syracuse's regular home and away jerseys.
