State police have identified the two men killed in a series of crashes Monday on the New York State Thruway in Mendon, Monroe County.

Michael Pehrson, 51 of Batavia and Christopher Rheinheimer of Darien died when the pickup truck they were riding in was hit head-on by a commercial vehicle that had crossed the median.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of the Thruway, between exits 45 and 46.

Troopers said a commercial vehicle hauling a construction dumpster in the eastbound lane crossed the median, striking the pickup truck.

A total of six vehicles were involved in the crash. The highway was closed to traffic for several hours.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was identified as Roger Labar, 51 of Prattsburgh, Steuben County. He and the driver of another truck are being treated for injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Police say they are investigating the cause of the crash. There are still no charges or arrests. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
