A Rochester man accused of shooting another man outside of the Cedarwood Towers apartments on East Main Street returned to court Monday.
James Johnson, 27, is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Tyler Cody.
Johnson is accused of shooting Cody outside the apartment complex around 8 p.m. on April 30. Police arrested Johnson after a traffic stop a few days later.
He was charged with possession of marijuana and then later charged with second degree murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charges last week.
Prosecutors said they do not believe Johnson and Cody knew each other, and that most of Cody's family lives out of state.
"It is definitely tough. I know that he has family who are out of state in Florida," said Assistant District Attorney Michael Harrigan. "It is tough for them not being here and he also has brothers and sisters who are here, so it is tough, as you can expect."
This case will now head to a grand jury.
Johnson is being held without bail.
