An application has been submitted in favor of bringing a charter school to Phelps, Ontario County.
Classical Charter School of the Finger Lakes would be a tuition-free public school that takes a more traditional approach to schooling.
Founder Donna Bennett says she wants a different way to educate children with more parental involvement. She says the idea started after she observed concerns about the literature and concepts taught in public school.
"When you start to offend a certain population with a public school, you know, it gets parents riled up, so we started to go to the board of education and have talks and it seemed like we weren't being listened to," Bennett said.
Bennett says she expects to hear whether the proposal was accepted or rejected in April. If it is, they'd receive their charter by June and open in 2015.
