A luncheon was held Thursday afternoon to honor outgoing Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard.
Several hundred people attended the event, including police, city and school leaders. The event was held at the Plaza Hotel on State Street.
Sheppard announced his retirement in November. His last day with the department is Dec. 31.
Sheppard leaves the RPD after more than 30 years of service. Sheppard was named deputy chief in 2006. He left the RPD in 2008 to become director of safety and security for the Rochester City School District.
In 2010, Sheppard was appointed director of the city's Office of Public Integrity. He was named Chief of Police in November of that year.
Sheppard says he is leaving the department on his own terms.
