Senator Charles Schumer was in Greece Wednesday to urge the DEA to allow pharmacies to have take-back programs and buyback programs where people can come and return their leftover medication for money.
He says these events offer a way to get residents to bring in old and unused medication to be disposed of properly.
Schumer says 70 percent of prescription drug abuse begins not through drug dealers, but rather leftover drugs left in medicine cabinets.
"When kids see those pills on the medicine cabinet shelf like they are here, they say, this is okay for me," said Sen. Schumer, D-New York.
Schumer says prescription drug abuse has become the number one problem of drug abuse in the Rochester area and the United States.
