The Independence Party says it is supporting Rochester Mayor Tom Richards in next month's mayoral election, despite Mayor Richards having ended his campaign.
Richards lost in the Democratic Primary to Rochester City Council President Lovely Warren. Following the primary, Mayor Richards announced he would end his re-election campaign citing family issues. A week later his son Matthew died after losing a long battle with cancer.
Richards will still be on the ballot on the Working Families and Independence Party lines in next month's election.
In a statement, Mayor Richards said:
"At the time of my announcement, I stated that I was not going to entertain political speculation. That also continues to be true. Since that time, I have been concentrating my time on my family and on my job as Mayor. I have not had any conversations with any political party leader regarding the mayoral election."
