The East House celebrated its 5th annual Hope and Recovery Luncheon Wednesday with guest speaker Patrick Kennedy.
Kennedy, a former Congressman from Rhode Island and son of the late U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, spoke at the event to increase awareness and highlight the efforts of those with mental illness.
Kennedy was one of the chief sponsors of the 2008 Mental Health Parity Act. The act required group health plans provide coverage for the treatment of mental illness.
"I was proud to be the sponsor of a law in this country that says the brain is part of the body and that our medical system ought to treat the brain like it would any other organ of the body," Kennedy said. "What I love about East House is they're about supporting people in recovery."
East House works with those who have mental illnesses or chemical dependency issues to help them live satisfying and productive lives.
