DEC Issues Consent Order Against Hillcrest Industries in Attica

  • Text size: + -

ATTICA, N.Y. — The State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued a consent order against Hillcrest Industries in Attica. Hillcrest is the company responsible for a noxious odor that hung over the village last summer.

The DEC is fining Hillcrest $100,000. The money will support an undetermined "environmental benefit project" in Attica.

Last summer, a giant pile of recyclable glass and garbage on Hillcrest property began to burn, causing the odor. The company was also cited for water and air pollution.

The DEC gave Hillcrest a list of orders for improvement. If Hillcrest does not comply with those orders, the company could face another $300,000 in fines.
