Before the fireworks, families started their celebration early Monday evening with free activities offered by the city. Most people are looking ahead in the hopes of a more peaceful year.

The family friendly New Year's Eve celebration put on by the city included free iceskating at Manhattan Square Park.

At the Convention Center, family activities ranged from giant bounce houses and photo booths to a DJ dance party that got everyone ready for the celebration.

When asked what they wanted out of year 2013, most said good health and more time to spend with family.

"We do this every year, we love it, it's awesome the kids love it, the fireworks are awesome at the end."

And while families say a lot of great moments were shared this year, there are some things they hope to never see again.

"I usually base it on my own life and what's going on around me but I would say the tragedies that have gone on, have hit really hard. Connecticut, what happened in Webster on Christmas Eve, there's been too many of them," said Rebecca Markel, Brighton.

"I'd like to see less violence in 2013, the gun violence just seemed too much towards the last part of the year, I'd like to see a lot more people being nicer to people and a lot less violence is what we want to see," said Mark Liebeck, Churchville.

But in the end, New Year's Eve represents something much more powerful.

"To see that there's hope in life even admist tragedy. I think the New Year sets the precedence that you can start over and the way you've been and they way thinks have been going don't have to stay that way, I can change what's going on and be a difference in the world."
