A nearly 100-year-old tunnel beneath the Genesee River will find new life.
Rochester Gas and Electric re-opened a 2,000-foot-long power tunnel running under the river as part of its renovation project at Station Number Five.
Situated between the Lower and Middle Falls, the tunnel will help the station generate 46 megawatts of electricity; enough to power about 30,000 local homes.
"To pour the concrete, to get the concrete down the tunnel under the river and get that in place, with all the reinforcing steel and all the work, it was a major undertaking. So it's a great day for RG&E and its customers," said Hugh Ives, RG&E.
The five-year renovation project cost $111 million.
