Action for a Better Community is once again encouraging men to read to their kids. Wednesday is the 5th Annual "Real Men Read" Program.

This is part of a national initiative to get more men involved with their children’s education and inspire them to read to and with their children at home.

Action for a Better Community's Head Start Male Involvement Committee has invited all fathers, uncles and family friends to the various Head Start locations Wednesday around the Rochester area to spend time in class reading with the kids.

Head Start is focused on early childhood development and this effort is called 'Real Men Read.'

It emphasizes how important a parent's role is and how men can help develop children into better readers and students.

Parent Advocate Ken Hutton said, “Part of the motivation for doing these male involvement activities is to get more male caregivers involved in their children’s lives, especially with their early education because it has so many positive effects later on in life. And a variety of different research studies have shown that children who have involved male parents or male caregivers are less likely to be involved in crime, less likely to have behavior issues, their academic performance is higher and their overall family functioning tends to be better.”

More than 100 volunteers spent some time at five Head Start locations reading books to kids.

It's something Head Start want families to do everyday together.
