The strength of a soldier and our country is captured by a 350 pound eagle with a ten foot wing span. The structure's rugged texture also reflects the resolve of a veteran.

"To see what it's like for our veterans, particularly for the WWII veterans, because we are losing them too quickly and that so many could be here today to see this, to know how much this communtiy cared, to remember them and their service," said Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle.

It took years of planning, hundreds of donations and six months of detailed work to bring the eagle to life.

"It's made of stainless steel, and it's all rods. All the pieces are individually welded. I wanted to get the power of the wings. I wanted to get the honoring aspect, bowing to our veterans," said sculptor Mary Taylor.

The eagle is facing South because he's looking forward to what's ahead. Town Supervisor Bill Moehle says there are plans in place to have this area become the main entrance to the park. And the focal point, where all the trails will eventually meet, will be at the monument.

"When you go to Washington, some of the monuments are so dull and this is so inspiring," said Richard Rosen.

The five branches of the military encircle the monument. Veterans say through the harshness of war, only the strong survive, and the eagle is prepared for the same, through hard times or harsh weather.

"He is strong, made completely of steel. So who can tell what mother nature will do but I have total confidence in it," said Taylor.
