National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week begins Sunday.

Locally, the Open Door Mission has been helping Rochester's homeless for 60 years. The organization assists people in crisis with food, shelter, counseling and spiritual support for men, women and children. It also distributes more than 100,000 articles of free clothing every year.

"We are averaging six to eight turnaways per night for the course of this year. That is new and we normally do not experience that kind of "no vacancies" until the fourth quarter," said Michael Hennesey, Open Door Mission. "People are coming off of 99 weeks of unemployment and there is still no jobs so people are finding themselves the benefits are running out every month for some folks and there is not a job for them and they are coming in to use our services."

Volunteers are preparing for the annual Thanksgiving Banquet where they'll feed more than 400 people. They are also looking for donations for the annual "Stuff the Bus" event. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
