Some local veterans are visited a local school Friday morning for Greece Athena Middle School's "Take a Vet to School Day."

It's a nationwide initiative that connects veterans of all ages with young people in schools and communities.

Some of the guests included a World War II veteran, paratroopers, a Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, among other veterans. More than 600 students were able to listen to stories from the veterans to appreciate their service.

World War II veteran John Foy said, "Just to better appreciate what their fathers and grandfather have done for them, and now the young guys coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan, it's a completely different kind of war that they're fighting than what we did. When we were there at least we knew who we were fighting." He added the importance of sharing experiences now, "Once our guys are gone, our stories are gone."

Eighth grader Ahmad Collier said, "The veterans, we've never had to experience what they've had to experience and they did that for justice and for our nation so we could all be free. So I think they did us a great favor."

Social Studies teacher Bill Baird said, "We're amazed how many students will come back and say they talked to their father, they talked to their grandfather about Vietnam or even a great grandfather, who's still around about World War II that many of them have said and even parents have said their father never talked about it to them and now they're talking about it to their grandchild because of something like this."

The program is sponsored by the History Channel and Time Warner Cable, which is the parent company of YNN.
