Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks held a press conference Tuesday morning to update information on the county's response to Sandy.

Brooks says Monroe County no longer remains in a State of Emergency and lifted the evacuation order for residents along the lake. A mandatory evacuation for all residents living in the low-lying areas along the Lake Ontario shoreline was issued Monday night. Around 2,250 residents were asked to evacuate their homes in parts of Hamlin, Parma, Irondequoit, Rochester, and Greece.

Sixty mile an hour winds whipped up ten to twelve foot waves that crashed against those lakeshore properties.

Cleanup efforts are now the top priority for residents in the Greater Rochester area with several uprooted trees that ripped down, power lines and water damage. Brooks says there are no current travel restrictions for residents, but all Monroe County parks are closed. No injuries or fatalities have been reported in our area.

As of 12 p.m. Tuesday, thousands in Western New York remain without power. Rochester Gas and Electric reports more than 17 thousand customers without power in Monroe County alone.

"We do want residents throughout the day to keep their eyes open for any problem areas in the community. If they could, if they see something that needs attention, if they could let one of the public safety agencies know and we can get a crew out there and make sure that we can get it taken care of," said Brooks. "And because we've lifted our State of Emergency any resources that we have here locally that can be shared with any other parts of the state, especially downstate, we will be making those resources available to other parts of New York."
