A State of Emergency has been declared for the City of Rochester and Monroe County and will be in effect until further notice. The Red Cross is opening two emergency shelters beginning at 3 p.m. Monday: The Dome Arena on East Henrietta Road in Henrietta and the Brighton Presbyterian Church on East Avenue.

Emergency personnel in the Rochester area are monitoring the storm at Monroe County's Emergency Operations Center. The center was activated at 10 a.m. Monday.

The center is where emergency managers from across Monroe County are gathered and staying on top of the storm. The officials at the center stay in contact with state and federal officials and the National Weather Service.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring high winds to the Rochester area. Those winds have the potential to bring down trees and power lines. There is also the threat of damage along the Lake Ontario shoreline as waves are expected to slam the shoreline driven by northerly winds.

Monroe County Executive, Maggie Brooks says now is the time to take precautions. “We just want people to be prepared. We can stand here and tell them that these things are happening, the storm is approaching, we could be hit by the storm, but at the end of the day, residents need to take personal responsibility, they need to start preparing their home,” said Brooks.

Many communities along the shoreline have requested sandbags from Monroe County. The towns are making the sandbags available to those who live along Lake Ontario.
