State Police say a 50-year-old Syracuse man was killed when the car he was in, was struck by a flatbed truck early this morning on the New York State Thruway near Exit 41 in Waterloo.
According to the chief of the Magee Fire Department, the driver of the tractor trailer, 34-year-old Jeffrey Wise of Oswego, was traveling east on the Thruway when he hit a car driven by Mykhaylo Galasa.
After the truck struck the car, it then crashed through a fence and hit a parked tractor trailer in the Petro truck stop parking lot.
A truck driver and his wife were asleep in the cab of their truck. The couple says they were on their way to a delivery in Massachussetes and had stopped to rest for the night. The crash knocked the microwave and tv on top of them, but they said they're okay.
Wise suffered minor injuries. The fire department says Galasa died at the scene.
"A lot of damage. We weren't really expecting to see that much damage. Based on the initial dispatch, we didn't expect for it to come off the Thruway even. We thought it was in the intersection. So to see the amount of damage that was involved, we were really surprised that there weren't more injuries," said Glenn Briggs of the Magee Fire Department.
Authorities had to close the right lane in that stretch of the Thruway near Waterloo for more than six hours for the investigation.
