A Pittsford man is under arrest after telling police at Letchworth State Park he sent his car over the cliff to the riverbed 400 feet below.
Benjamin Smith, 42, is charged with criminal mischief and criminal nuisance.
Witnesses told police they heard a loud noise in the area of the Genesee River gorge around 1:20 p.m. Friday.
When police arrived to the scene, they saw a visibly wrecked vehicle at the base of the gorge.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene and began preparing for a rope rescue.
Upon further investigation, police determined the vehicle had been unoccupied and sent into the gorge intentionally.
According to police, Smith was located and taken into custody in the village of Mt. Morris. He was remanded to the Livingston County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.
