The Fairport Police Department confirms the body pulled from the Erie Canal Tuesday is that of a missing 22-year-old Webster man.
Chief Maureen Chisholm says the identification at the medical examiner's office was made by a family designee.
A search crew pulled Sean Scott's car out of the canal Tuesday night. Police think he got confused, ended up driving along the Erie Canal path and was trying to turn around when he accidentally drove in.
“Our initial information, he was not familiar with the area, and if you recall Saturday overnight to Sunday was very dark, rainy, it was pretty poor weather that night,” says Fairport Police Chief Maureen Chisholm. “So we feel that he probably got on the canal path thinking he was going down a road.”
An autopsy will be performed Wednesday and the medical examiner could have a cause of death by the end of the day Wednesday or Thursday.
