Weight and health tend to go hand in hand, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had exactly that and his family in mind when he had gastric band surgery in February.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery said that about 200,000 people have surgery for weight loss every year.

Highland Hospital is the leading provider of weight-loss surgery in the region. The director of the bariatric Surgery Center at Highland, Dr. William O'Malley, talked about what it means to go through bariatric surgery.

"As important as having the procedure, we tell folks, that's just day one of your therapy. Your therapy starts on the day of surgery and it never ends. When you stop treating yourself, the disease can come back," O'Malley said.

O'Malley says weight loss surgery is currently the best treatment for morbid obesity. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
